ICC Award for Water Resource Management 2013

LANXESS India Private Limited received the award for Water Resource Management from Indian Chemical Council (ICC) for the year 2013.  LANXESS has been systematically pursuing an integrated water management strategy at its manufacturing site in Nagda, Madhya Pradesh and has worked towards ‘zero discharge’ goal which has been accomplished through the commissioning of  the Waste Water Post Treatment Plant in 2012.

The said area in Nagda, is water scarce with regard to both residential and industrial consumption. LANXESS has made consistent efforts in improving its water utilization at the site as it consumes high volumes of steam for production. It had commissioned a sewage water treatment plant in 2009, which treats sewage from colonies around and renders it fit for use in production process. Subsequently, the company commissioned a RO plant to treat the sewage water further making it fit for use as boiler feed  water. This was followed by an evaluation of the possibility of recycling the entire treated waste water at the site, which culminated in the Waste Water Post Treatment Plant project. The project concept involves a reverse osmosis process followed by an evaporation step. The WWPTP, built with exotic construction materials in partnership by some of the best known suppliers, treats discharge from the existing ETP in a manner that virtually no liquid effluents are discharged from the site, thus meeting the ‘Zero Discharge’ mission.

The water recovered from this plant is used for the production processes, which bridges the gap in availability of water during the summer months. More importantly, it prevents contamination of river Chambal, which is the primary source of water for villagers downstream.

These initiatives have reduced the fresh water requirement of the plant to one-eighth, which means that the amount of fresh water that was required to run the plant for one year before implementing these initiatives, will now be sufficient for about 8 years.
