Incident at Nagda Site

After leakage of material, situation is under control

On 30 April 2013, at 09:15 pm there was an incident at our Nagda facility where a glass tube rotameter in the Thionyl Chloride plant developed a crack. Consequently there was leakage of material. Due to the strong wind, the fumes spread in the nearby Durgapura area adjacent to the plant, where some community members experienced breathing discomfort. The administration together with the LANXESS team on site took immediate measures. The situation was brought under control, the release was stopped forthwith. The affected people, who experienced breathing discomfort, were admitted at a hospital. They have all been discharged in the meantime.

Mr. Bappa Bandyopadhyay (Vice President Manufacturing, Nagda site, LANXESS India) said:  “We deeply regret the occurrence of this incident and the possible effects on the well-being of the community members. As a responsible corporate we have taken necessary action as the situation demanded and the situation is under control. The commitment towards Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) is an integral part of the LANXESS framework and is incorporated in all our policies and processes worldwide. At Nagda site also we comply with all necessary safety regulations and we are committed towards the safety of the people and the environment“

LANXESS in Nagda

LANXESS acquired Nagda site from Gwalior Chemicals in September 2009, and has been making significant investments in improving the safety and environment standards of the plant. Neelanjan Banerjee (Head of Business Unit Advanced Industrial Intermediates India and Senior Executive Director LANXESS India) said: “We have used some of the best technologies available in the world and have partnered with some of the best known suppliers in this industry to upgrade Nagda with regard to safety“.

In October 2010 inaugurated a state-of-the-art co-generation power plant at Nagda site. The cogeneration plant, which is fuelled by the biomass fuel soya husk, generates up to four megawatts of power and 45 tons of steam per hour, thus meeting virtually most of the power requirements of the plant at the site.

As the most recent milestone, LANXESS announced the opening of a new Waste Water Post Treatment Plant at Nagda site in November 2012. This plant treats the discharge from the existing Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) in a manner that virtually no liquid effluent is discharged from the site. The water recovered from the waste water post treatment plant is used for the production processes, which bridges the gap in availability of water during the summer months.

At Nagda, LANXESS has also carried out several projects in the area of education and skills training as part of its Corporate Social responsibility program. These initiatives include programs in providing infrastructure support to schools, support for the physically challenged and vocational training for women in addition to a public library among others.
