LANXESS expands its green zone on World Environment Day

  • 2000 saplings to be planted in and around the site in Jhagadia
  • 2000 saplings to be planted at the site in Nagda

Mumbai, June 05, 2012:
LANXESS, a global specialty chemicals company that practises sustainable development, is furthering its efforts towards protecting the environment on World Environment Day. The company will plant around 2000 saplings in and around its site in Jhagadia over the next one month, as a part of its ambitious target to plant 7000 plants. At its site in Nagda, 2000 saplings will be planted over a period of the next four months.

At the site in Jhagadia, the tree plantation ceremony was organized in presence of local media, officials from Gujarat Pollution Control Board, police officials and LANXESS employees from the site. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dattaprasad Talekar, Site head – Jhagadia and Executive Director, LANXESS India said, “Protecting our environment is our duty as a good corporate citizen and a responsible company. We hope that our plantation efforts will help create a green cover at the site, which will be in interest of the neighboring communities as well.” In addition, LANXESS also planted 100 saplings in the compound of Jhagadia police station on this day.

LANXESS has planted 1500 trees at the site in Jhagadia till date. In the past, LANXESS has supported Sewa Rural, a voluntary development organization, for their futuristic projects on equipping and strengthening amenities in the campus and supporting services for students of Vivekananda Gramin Tekniki Kendra. Through this contribution, the proposed water harvesting and drainage systems have been built, the water lagoon facility has been made more effective and accessories for overhead tank and pipelines have been constructed.

At the site in Nagda, the ceremony was organized in the presence of Mr. Sajjan Singh Shekhawat, Deputy Chairperson, Nagda Municipality, Mr. Subodh Swami, President - Congress, Nagda, Mr. Mahesh Agarwal, Corporator, Nagda, Mr. S.B Tiwari, SRO, Pollution Control Board, Nagda, dignitaries from the Government of Madhya Pradesh, officials from the local community, media and LANXESS employees from the site. Speaking on the occasion, Bappa Bandyopadhyay, Vice President – Manufacturing, Nagda site said, 'As a responsible corporate, sustainable development is our prime responsibility. We at LANXESS have been at the forefront in environment protection and we believe these efforts will benefit the community.' Since 2010, around 4500 saplings have already been planted at the site so far. As a part of its drive towards sustainable development, the company also sponsored solar lamps for the streets of Mehetwas, the village neighboring the LANXESS site in Nagda.

In 2010, LANXESS commissioned cogeneration plants for generation of steam and electricity at both its manufacturing sites. These plants serve the need of the LANXESS production facilities at the sites. The cogeneration plant in Nagda runs using biomass as a fuel while the one in Jhagadia is fuelled by environment friendly natural gas. A noteworthy feature is the solo NoX model at the plant in Jhagadia that curbs nitrogenous emissions. These are some of the examples of LANXESS’ commitment towards minimizing risks for the environment.
