LANXESS offers best in class solutions for industrial water treatment at Aquatech India 2014

Delhi, May 6 - 8, Hall 7 (A-H) / Booth B9

New Delhi: Specialty chemicals company LANXESS is showcasing high-performance ion exchange resins from its proven brand Lewatit®, together with Lewabrane® reverse osmosis (RO) membrane elements at Aquatech India 2014. These premium products meet the highest German and international production and quality standards. They come together with a comprehensive service portfolio including the LewaPlusTM design software.

“At Aquatech, we will showcase our expertise as an experienced one-stop supplier for all water treatment requirements in the fast growing Indian water market,” says Jean-Marc Vesselle, Head of the Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) business unit.

The Lewabrane® RO elements, manufactured at LANXESS' Bitterfeld site in Germany, comprise a polyamide composite membrane, wound in several layers to form a spiral wound element. They are characterized by a high degree of polymerization and a low surface charge, which in itself reduces the accumulation of dissolved solids at the membrane surface. Furthermore, a special feed spacer has been incorporated in the specially developed Lewabrane® FR (fouling resistance) types. The membrane elements were designed to generate greater turbulence in the feedwater channel, meaning that less solids accumulate on the membrane surface. The separation elements were engineered specifically for industrial water treatment. The fields of application include the desalination of brackish and low-salinity water with a high potential for organic or biological fouling.

Lewatit® one of the leading brands from LANXESS in the field of water treatment using ion exchange resins, continues to rule the roost backed by decades of LANXESS’ experience in dealing with customers across the globe. Based on different possible customer applications, the range of ion exchange resins, adsorbers and functional polymers is divided into the segments – water and process specialties (PSP) which include foodstuffs, catalysis, biotechnology and chemicals processing. LANXESS offers new and established products from the Lewatit® range for all these sectors. In combination with Lewabrane® reverse osmosis membrane elements, they meet the highest demands in the industry.

Another state-of-the-art offering from LANXESS is the LewaPlus™ design software. This software is a comprehensive tool for engineering systems that uses Lewatit® ion exchange resins (IX) and Lewabrane® membrane elements for reverse osmosis (RO). The application calculates RO system configurations and their output, including feed pressure and permeates quality. LewaPlus™ is the only software application that can design an entire reverse osmosis process with downstream ion exchange, and the only one that can integrate in its calculations post-treatment involving a degasification system or chemical addition. This is a typical application for water treatment in power plants. The combination of membrane separation elements and ion exchange resins ensure that efficiency and economy go hand in hand.

“For any given water treatment need, optimal solutions can be designed by LANXESS combining its ion exchange resins and membrane technologies. While RO membrane technology is very cost-efficient for water with a high salt content, only ion exchange resins can purify water with low salt concentrations to the point where purely trace amounts remain. With both methods connected in series, water of the highest purity can be produced even from very poor quality water. Our service includes assistance with plant design, with regard not only to applications engineering, but also the economic and ecological aspects,” explains Prakash Shanmugam, Head of LPT at LANXESS India.

“Despite the heavy rainfall during monsoons and the several water bodies intercepting our country, India has a rather low groundwater table reserve. Of the total water available in the country, only around 60 percent is utilizable water. This explains why optimization of the existing water reserves we have, through adequate treatment and storage is quintessential,” adds Shanmugam.

Another accreditation of LANXESS’ water treatment solutions in India is the certification from Halal India and The Halal Committee, Jamiat Ulama - E - Maharashtra (JUM) that the production plant in Jhagadia, Gujarat, has obtained. The certification states that the company’s manufacturing process of ion exchange resins contains permitted ingredients, therefore is lawful for Muslim use.
