LANXESS water treatment solutions well-positioned to serve the water and wastewater treatment industry of South India

Chennai, February 26, 2015: LANXESS, the global specialty chemicals company, is showcasing it’s ion exchange resins and membrane technologies at Water Today Expo 2015, with a special focus on seawater desalination and waste water recycling solutions. These solutions are well-positioned to cater to the needs of the seawater desalination plants around Chennai and also to supply reliable solutions to the several effluent treatment plants in Tamil Nadu. LANXESS water treatment solutions, consisting of ion exchange resins and reverse osmosis membranes, are specifically suited for processing the effluents generated from the several textile industries and leather tanneries in the region. Such LANXESS solutions also help these industries to meet the increasingly stringent regulations with regard to environmental compliance.

Prakash Shanmugam, Head of Business Unit Liquid Purification Technologies, LANXESS India, said on the occasion, “Desalination of sea water for farming and in generating drinking water is increasingly being looked at as an alternative and the sea water desalination plants set up in this region in the last couple of years validate the opportunity. Energy-efficient, eco-friendly desalination technologies from LANXESS, using Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes offer the right solutions. We are also glad to be able to partner with the several Common Effluent Treatment plants in this region, for example, those in Tirupur, and offer them tailor-made waste water treatment solutions. Lewabrane RO membrane elements are ideal in combination with our Lewatit range of ion exchange resins provide answers for all water and wastewater treatment needs.”

The products on display at the exhibition are new spiral-wound membrane elements for seawater desalination and several grades of ion exchange resins which can be used for removal of metal ions, fluorides and other contaminants from effluent/ wastewater streams.

The family of products currently encompasses six grades of reverse osmosis (RO), which were specially developed for sea water desalination. LANXESS is producing the reverse osmosis elements at its German plant in Bitterfeld, which was opened in 2011. Main areas of application include the production of boiler feed water, wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation and full demineralization for microchip fabrication.

For the cleaning of industrial effluent of the treatment of groundwater, the removal of toxic, ionic and non-ionic substances is of key importance. LANXESS has a range of special Lewatit ion exchange and adsorber resins that are able to remove many types of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants. Due to the high selectivity of the resin, extremely low concentrations are economically achievable, thereby ensuring that only contaminant free water is released in the environment. Some of the specific applications that could be relevant to effluent treatment industries are –  selective removal of fluorides, arsenic, iron from groundwater and industrial waste water, and selective recovery of gold, silver, rhodium and other such precious metals.

LANXESS is one of the few companies that offer both ion exchange resins and reverse osmosis membrane elements – two different yet complementary water treatment technologies, thus making it the right partner for a range of industries seeking water and water treatment solutions. The company has a manufacturing unit for ion exchange resins at its site in Jhagadia in Gujarat and along with its excellent technical support, it is well-placed to meet the rapidly growing domestic demand as well as that of the overseas markets.
