LANXESS India celebrates World Environment Day

  • LANXESS India organizes tree plantation drive at the manufacturing site in Nagda, Madhya Pradesh.
  • LANXESS India organizes poster competition for all employees across its offices

LANXESS India, a Germany based specialty chemicals company is celebrating World Environment Day today at its manufacturing plant in Nagda, Madhya Pradesh and across its corporate offices. On this occasion, a tree plantation drive has been initiated wherein around 3000 saplings are going to be planted at the Nagda site over the next 3 months. Also, a poster competition has been organized for all LANXESS employees across its offices wherein they would submit posters on select themes around environment related issues like ‘Water’.

LANXESS is committed to its responsibility of protecting the environment. This has been a focus area ever since its inception in 2004. LANXESS has constantly innovated towards improving the performance of its technologies, products and processes over their life cycles in order to minimize risks for the people and environment.

A power plant being constructed at the Nagda site in Madhya Pradesh is underlying the efforts. The new plant will be run on biomass fuels. Following completion, it will cut net carbon dioxide emissions there to zero. At the production site in Jhagadia in Gujarat, LANXESS is currently building a plant for the production of ion exchange resins. Energy here will be generated by an ultra-efficient plant run on environmentally friendly natural gas.

Additionally, the production site in Nagda is employing innovative technology for recycling domestic sewage water and harnessing it for industrial use. Given the paucity of water supply in Nagda, for irrigation as well as industrial purposes, the recycled water contributes significantly to the overall water balance. LANXESS’ initiatives like these are also proving beneficial for its local community.

Another important initiative that gives credence to LANXESS’ commitment towards the environment is the ‘zero discharge site’ at the manufacturing site in Madurai, Tamil Nadu which does not discharge treated effluents outside the factory premises. This has been made possible by reducing, eliminating and recycling waste water. The manufacturing site also has a rain water harvesting facility that collects the rain water from the roof of the building and directs it to a storage facility of 250 kilo litre capacity.

In order to facilitate scientific disposal of solid wastes from the plant, LANXESS has signed an agreement with Tamil Nadu Waste Management Limited (TWML).
Over and above these initiatives, the plant has a vast expanse of green cover, with more than 12,000 trees being nurtured at the manufacturing site.

Globally, from 2007 to 2009, LANXESS has reduced its direct climate gas emissions by more than 50 percent, annual emissions from the group’s plants globally were cut from 3.5 million to 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents.

Dr. Joerg Strassburger, Managing Director and Country Representative, LANXESS India said, “Globally LANXESS is known as a conscious corporate. LANXESS has always been committed to green chemistry in its products and processes and has made eco-friendly choices available to the industry. In India too, we firmly believe in sustainable development and all our business practices are based on that belief”.
