LANXESS’ sustainable solutions for the paint & coatings industry

Mumbai, March 6, 2014: LANXESS, a global specialty chemicals company, presents its comprehensive product portfolio for the paint and coatings industry at the exhibition Paint India 2014 in Mumbai from March 6-8. The business unit Material Protection Products (MPP) displayed its biocides which are effective for the coatings industry while business unit, Inorganic Pigments (IPG) showcased its broad range of environmentally friendly pigments at this exhibition.

Pigments
At the exhibition, LANXESS showcased the whole color range of iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments, and exhibit its sustainable, innovative solutions. LANXESS Inorganic Pigments products – marketed under the well-known brand names Bayferrox and Colortherm – cater to the paint and coatings, construction plastics and paper industries.

The paint and coatings market is very important for LANXESS as it is one of the fastest growing applications for LANXESS’ specialty products. The ongoing urbanization in India creates a growing demand for the coatings industry.

High-quality pigments from LANXESS Inorganic Pigments business unit offer not only outstanding light fastness, high tinting strength, color consistency and weather stability but also an unmatched dispersibility.

LANXESS is building a new facility for premium iron oxide red pigments in Ningbo, China, using the Penniman process optimized by the company to ensure high environmental compatibility by optimizing water treatment and waste gas cleaning. The plant, characterized by its particularly high energy efficiency, is designed to meet and exceed the latest environmental standards.

“With this plant we will be the first inorganic pigments’ manufacturer that is able to produce these yellow shade red pigments in an environmentally-friendly and consistent way,” Rafael Suchan, Vice President for the Inorganic Pigments business unit in Asia Pacific.

LANXESS already operates one of China’s largest and most modern plants for iron oxide pigments production in Jinshan, Shanghai. This plant has an annual capacity of 38,000 metric tons of high-quality iron oxide yellow and black pigments each year. With an annual capacity of more than 350,000 metric tons, the LANXESS Inorganic Pigments (IPG) business unit is one of the world's leading manufacturers of inorganic iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments.

Biocides
Rapid industrialization, economic activity and rising demand from urbanization especially the construction applications are driving demand for the Paints and pigments industry. This is especially true for industrial preservatives, dryfilm fungicide & algaecide. The LANXESS Material Protection Products business unit, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of biocidal active ingredients and biocide formulations, has recently started using a new formulation method for algicides in paints. This new method delivers added benefits for algicidal formulations. Several tests show that it reduced active ingredient leaching from paints caused by rain by over 50 percent compared to conventional algicides. By improving leaching behavior, the lifetime of facade coatings are extended and the amount of active ingredient required is reduced.

Along with outstanding technical service, the LANXESS Preventol® biocides range for coatings fulfill the key demands placed on such products: low toxicity, non-VOC, non FA, environmental friendly, cost-effectiveness and compatibility with other components of the coating. These products not only preserve the good appearance of facades or patios, for example, but also safeguard the value of these objects in the long term.
